"Happy Father's Day" What to Write in the Card

Father’s Day cards are funny things. Most of the time, we grab one last-minute, sign it with a quick "Happy Father's Day, love you!" and call it a day.

But the truth is, the message inside matters. It’s your chance to tell him he's great, roast him gently, or say the things that usually go unsaid. But sitting down with a pen and staring at a blank page can be daunting. How can you sum up everything in a couple of sentences? Maybe you’re close. Maybe things are a bit more complicated. Maybe the person you’re celebrating isn’t your biological dad, but the father figure who showed up when it mattered.

If you’re staring at a blank page, having a mini crisis, don't worry. Here are a few simple, meaningful, and actually useful message ideas for all types of dads!

 

1. For the New Dad (The First Father's Day)

• Happy 1st Father's Day! You are doing a brilliant job, even if you always have baby sick on your shoulder.
• Happy Father’s Day! The sleep might be shit right now, but you’re already the best dad!
• Happy Father’s Day! As exhausted as you are right now, you’re doing amazing and we love you so much!

2. For the Grandad

• Happy Father's Day, Grandad! Thanks for always being the one who lets us get away with everything Mum and Dad won't.
• Happy Father’s Day to the anchor of our family. Thanks for everything you do for us Grandad!
• Happy Father’s Day! This is a little reminder of how much we appreciate you. Thanks for always being there for a chat and a cuppa.

3. For the Father Figure

At the end of the day, it is always best to write like yourself. If you usually rip into each other, don't write a poem. If you’re close, don't be afraid to say it. And if all else fails, just draw a little arrow pointing to the card illustration and write: "Look, it's us."
